A MATTER OF NATIONAL CONCERN FOR INDIA

The Indian Cancer Registry reveals that maximum numbers of specific cancers in India come from East and North East India.

The Tata Medical Center, Kolkata is a world class, not-for-profit, cancer specialty hospital where close to half the beds are reserved for treatment of underprivileged patients.

The hospital stands as a beacon of hope for cancer patients who earlier had to travel to distant parts of India for treatment. Many would give up their treatment mid way in despair due to the burden of living in an alien city for long periods and the financial stress that goes with it.

However, with cancer cases on the rise and thousands streaming into the hospital each year not just from Eastern India but also from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Bhutan, the waiting periods for various treatments is a cause of great concern. There is an urgent need to expand existing facilities at Tata Medical Center and build a corpus to care for the poorest of the poor so that many lives can be saved.
